Getting the best price for your phone is not about one trick. It usually comes down to the details that affect demand, condition and confidence when the device is checked.
If you are comparing quotes, start with the basics: the exact model, storage size, colour, network status and condition. A small difference, such as 128GB instead of 256GB, can change the value. So can a cracked back, weak battery health, missing Face ID, heavy screen marks or a device that is still locked to a network.
Check the exact model before you compare prices
Many phones have similar names, especially iPhones, Samsung Galaxy models and Google Pixel devices. The quote for an iPhone 15 Pro will not be the same as an iPhone 15, and a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will not be valued the same as a standard S24.
Before you send anything, check the model name in your settings. Then compare against the right device page. If you are still working out the value, our guide on how much your phone is worth in the UK explains the main factors that affect a quote.
Be honest about condition
Condition is one of the biggest reasons a quote changes after assessment. A phone in Excellent condition should be fully working, clean, and free from obvious marks. Good, Fair and Poor grades allow for more visible wear, but faults still matter.
Look closely at the screen, frame, back glass, cameras and charging port. Test the speakers, buttons, Wi-Fi, mobile signal and biometric features. If Face ID, Touch ID, fingerprint unlock or the camera is faulty, the final value may be lower than a working device in the same storage size.
Clean it and remove accessories properly
A quick clean will not turn a damaged phone into an Excellent one, but it can help present the device accurately. Remove the case, wipe the screen and frame, and check for dust around the charging port. Do not use liquids directly on the phone.
Take out the SIM card and any memory card before posting. If the phone has a case, charger or box, only include them if the selling process asks for them. The phone itself is what drives the quote.
Back up, sign out and reset the phone
Before sending your phone, back up anything you want to keep. Then sign out of iCloud, Google, Samsung or other account locks. A phone that is still tied to an account can be delayed because it cannot be fully checked or reused.
Once you have backed up and signed out, factory reset the device. This protects your data and makes the assessment smoother. If you are preparing an iPhone, also switch off Find My iPhone before resetting it.
Think about timing
Phone values usually fall as newer models arrive and demand shifts. Waiting can make sense if you still need the device, but an unused phone in a drawer is usually losing value over time.
Our guide to phone depreciation covers why some models hold value better than others. If you already know you are going to sell, checking the price sooner gives you a clearer decision.
Compare the process, not just the headline price
The biggest number is not always the best deal if the process is unclear. Look at how the quote is assessed, how postage works, when payment is made and what happens if the condition does not match.
We covered this in our guide to the best place to sell your phone online in the UK. A good selling option should make the next step obvious and avoid surprises after the phone arrives.
Use sensible postage for higher-value phones
SellMobile's prepaid label covers up to ÂŖ150 insurance. If your phone is worth more than ÂŖ150, we advise using Royal Mail Special Delivery so the parcel is insured for the full value of the device.
That is especially worth thinking about for newer iPhones, Samsung flagship models, higher-storage phones and devices in Excellent condition.
Get the quote while the phone is still in good shape
If you want the best price, the strongest position is simple: know the exact model, describe the condition honestly, remove account locks, send it securely and avoid leaving it unused for months.
You can start with the SellMobile quote page, or browse by brand through Apple, Samsung and Google.
